10 Tips to Look Beautiful with Lipstick

Full, succulent lips have long been a symbol of irresistible allure for women. Especially in today’s modern life, applying lipstick daily is almost an “unmissable” beauty step for every lady, even when they don’t wear makeup to keep their faces always fresh and radiant.

But not everyone knows how to choose the right lipstick shade for their skin tone, or how to achieve the best beauty effect when applying lipstick. The following tips will help you solve these problems in the easiest way possible.

1. Exfoliate the lips

Makeup experts recommend exfoliating your lips regularly, from 1-2 times per week. This will help keep your lips red and plump, and prevent uneven lipstick application. To exfoliate, you can soften your lips with water, then gently brush your lips with a brush, or you can soak salt in olive oil (or almond oil), then soak it in a cloth and gently rub your lips. 

2. Limit shimmering lipstick

Many women still believe that shimmering lipstick will make their lips look more plump and full. But excessive use of lip gloss can make you look “cheesy” or even “cheap”. Instead, choose lipsticks with light shimmer, or lipsticks with satin components – they will help keep your lips soft, full, natural, and beautiful. 

3. Choose the right lipstick shade

Currently, there are hundreds (even thousands) of different lipstick shades available in cosmetic stores. However, not every woman knows how to choose the shade that suits them best. Makeup experts advise you to choose lipstick according to your lip color, not your skin tone. 

If your lips are slightly pale or light, you can choose coral or cherry red lipsticks. Pinker lips will look best with hot pink, orange, or blueberry shades. While darker lips are suitable for brick red or burgundy shades. 

4. Nude lip color 

The trend of wearing light nude lipstick is an unmissable makeup style. Nude lips look best when they stand out and are one tone darker than your skin. If you have slightly pale skin, you can choose a feminine pink nude shade. While dark skin will look best with a dark beige lip color. 

5. Avoid overly dark lip color

Dark lip colors, like maroon, can quickly make you look more than ten years older, not to mention they can make you look scary like a vampire. Although dark lip colors are dominating the Fall/Winter 2012 fashion runways, you should know how to choose the most suitable shade for yourself. Shades like pinkish-red, cherry red, or orange will make you look youthful, sexy, and stylish. 

6. Limit lip liner usage 

Lip liner is no longer an important step in makeup. Because if not done skillfully, your lips will look heavy and… artificial. If you have to use lip liner for important occasions or parties, choose a lip pencil that matches your lip color, not the lipstick color! This method will make your lips look natural and delicate even with the darkest lipstick shades. 

7. Soften the lip liner 

As mentioned above, lip liner is no longer important in makeup. There is a way for you to soften your lips after applying lip liner, which is to gently touch your lips after drawing. A blurry lip line will still provide lip shape definition.

8. Start from the center of the lips 

When applying lipstick, start from the center of your lips, then gently spread the lipstick towards the corners of your mouth. This is the “basic” technique whether you apply lipstick with a brush or any other makeup tool. This will help ensure that your lips are evenly colored and do not smudge.

9. Avoid applying too much lipstick

With any color, lips that are too dark with thick layers of lipstick can make you look older and somewhat “tacky”. To create the most natural feel for your lips, you simply need to apply a dark lipstick under the lip, and then gently close your lips. Or you can use your finger to gently rub both sides of your lips to apply a natural color to your upper lip.

10. Make lipstick last

To make your lipstick last the longest, apply the lipstick directly to your lips (instead of using a brush), then gently blot the lipstick with a tissue. Proceed to apply a second coat of lipstick. Blotting the lipstick will create a solid base layer on your lips, while the second coat will provide optimal coverage to make your lipstick last the longest.
